Fun Fact: did you know that oily-skinned women are less likely to
develop fine lines compared to dry-skinned women? But that does not make
an oily face a good look!
Oily skin is caused by the excessive production of sebum on the top
layer of the skin. There are many reasons why the skin produces excess
sebum such as raging hormones, genes and poor diet. The good news is,
you don’t have to turn to expensive creams to control oil and achieve a
glowing complexion. In today’s post, we are listing skin care tips to
control facial sebum:
Do not Over-Cleanse
Do not make the mistake of washing your face more than two times per
day or your skin will start producing more oil! There are cases wherein
excessive sebum is caused by dry skin. When the skin is dry, the body
will start producing more oil to keep the moisture in. Over-cleansing
will only wash away your skin’s natural oils, causing dry skin to dry up
even more!
Limit face washing to 2 times daily, one in the morning and another
at night. Use gel-based cleansers instead of cream based ones. Make sure
all skin products are oil-free.
Exfoliate Regularly
To achieve glowing skin, we highly recommend exfoliating your skin
regularly. Exfoliating the skin sloughs off dead skin cells that are
clogging the epidermis. These cells leave the skin splotchy, uneven
looking and dull. The buildup of dead skin cells also leads to pimples,
acne, blackheads and other skin issues!
You want to exfoliate your skin once or twice per week. Use gentle,
circular strokes to remove dead skin cells. If you are using a facial
scrub get one that is made with all-natural ingredients and less
abrasive scrubbing beads. Do note that some facial scrubs contain
polymer microbeads that pollute the waters and kill marine life. If you
are using an exfoliating brush, get one with very gentle fibers so it is
less abrasive to the skin!
Use Alcohol-Free Skin Care Products
Alcohol dries up the skin, triggering the over-production of sebum.
That’s why you have to avoid any beauty product that contains alcohol.
Read the label and check for alcohol in the ingredient list. Go for
toners that are mild, non-drying and contains zero alcohol such as rose
water or witch hazel.
Avoid Creamy, Emollient Moisturizers
To care for oily skin, you need to apply moisturizers regularly. But
you have to be selective in terms of the formula of your skin
moisturizer. Avoid emollient, creamy moisturizers that take a long time
to sink into the skin. This can clog the pores and worsen oiliness.
Stick to gel moisturizers and water-based face creams with very light
formulation. Usually, gel moisturizers go on mild on the skin and
absorbs easily. Avoid products with very strong fragrance. The scent
could cause skin breakouts. Make sure the moisturizers are also
non-comedogenic to avoid breakouts.
Protect Your Skin
Always protect your skin from the sun’s harsh rays by religiously
applying sunscreen every time you head out. Again, the right formula
counts if you have very oily skin. Use a sunscreen that applies light
and absorbs easily. Go for hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic formulas to
prevent greasiness and breakouts.
